Job Description:

We are looking for enthusiastic technical writing professionals who are interested in sharing their knowledge, passion and expertise with other adults. As a part-time instructor, you will also have the opportunity to network with others who share your interests while gaining valuable experience as a subject matter expert in your field.

Presently, we invite applications for qualified industry experts to teach courses in the Technical Writing Certificate program. Most courses are delivered in the evening (6:30-9:30pm) one evening per week over a five week period. Some courses are offered in a daytime format, 8:30-5:00pm (Friday or Saturday) once per semester. Instructors are contracted on a per course basis.

Teaching opportunities are anticipated in the following courses:

  • Foundations of Technical Communication (evening)
  • Writing User Guides (evening)
  • Technical Layout & Design (evening)
  • Preparing Policies & Procedures (evening)
  • Editing Basics for Technical Documents (evening)
  • Producing Software Specifications (evening)

  • Flare (Mapcap software course)

Your duties include:

  • Instruction: syllabus development, lesson preparation, course delivery, marking. Course materials are pre-developed but each instructor is required to prepare supplementary materials to enhance the course, as well as create their own teaching tools, eg. powerpoint, exercises, assignments
  • Administration: submit course evaluations, attendance sheets and grade records upon completion of course; attend annual instructor meeting and individual meetings with Program Coordinator as required.
Qualifications:
  • Degree, Diploma, Certificate in technical communications (equivalencies will be considered)
  • minimum 3-5 years experience in the technical writing industry
  • superior written and oral communication skills
  • enthusiasm and professionalism
  • strong organizational and time management skills
  • teaching experience in an adult education environment is an asset, as is the ability to utilize classroom-based technology to enhance student learning

Position: Technical Writer

Job Description:

Our client has a system they are implementing. The system is Allegro, and they require assistance creating both click-level procedural documentation for the application as well as business process documentation for tasks outside of Allegro.

This project requires:

  • 3 months - minimum 4 days on site in Calgary (preferably full-time)
  • Installing a new trade capture system for purchasing and selling of electricity in US and Canada
  • Creating both click-level procedural documentation for the application as well as business process documentation for tasks outside of Allegro
  • Writing procedures for entering, verifying, updating counterparty information including creditworthiness/rating
  • Risk monitoring procedures - monitoring that trades are entered and verified correctly and reported on
  • Do not necessarily need specific technical knowledge, but must be able to interview and understand how enterprise management and reporting systems work
  • Familiarity with Oracle may help - accounting system will interface - so you would have market and counterparty analysis, trade negotiation, entry, settlement and reporting activities flowing through this system
  • Familiarity with energy trading may help
  • Understanding of IT project management methodology

Position: Training Content Writer

Job Description:

Our client is in the midst of developing training materials in support of its upgrade and implementation of Primavera (P6 and Project Contracts Management).

There is a team of consultants and business representatives working together to scope and create a training curriculum for the project.

Writers will be a part of the team assigned to draft, quality assure, edit and publish course content.

The position reports to the Capital Projects Project Manager but will take direction from other team members as directed (i.e. Training Coordinator for the project).

Some of the daily responsibilities of this person will be:

  • Determine topics and learning objectives to be covered (based on a given curriculum)
  • Develop an outline for the training material
  • Use templates to draft presentations, instructor guides and participant guides
  • Work with SMEs to create and test data for use during hands-on exercises
  • Report on progress
  • Edit for grammar, terminology and other writing standards
  • Conduct peer reviews of training materials
  • Run client reviews and pilots
  • Use UPK (User Productivity Kit) to develop training simulations
Qualifications:

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience applying instructional design to develop training materials
  • Prior experience working on a software implementation project in a training role/capacity
  • Related certificate or degree (or 5+ years of experience) in the training field
  • Advanced MS Word skills (use of templates, styles, etc.)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Proven ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attention-to-detail
  • Proven ability to work independently with a high level of quality such that a final review produces very little feedback

Some of the nice-to-have skills include the following:

  • Training delivery experience
  • Primavera (PCM and/or P6)
  • Oil & Gas Industry experience
